Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve has placed a Broom Dance on its September program, which is the kind of crisp scheduling decision a culture desk can appreciate. The dance is part of a free Hispanic culture event at the Piñon Flats Amphitheater on Friday, September 18, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
The National Park Service says the afternoon will bring together Mariachi San Luis, Los Vecinos Bailadores, and Los Semillas de la Tierra. The performers will share music and dances rooted in the San Luis Valley’s Hispanic heritage, with regular park entrance fees applying.
A dance with a household-name prop
Los Vecinos Bailadores will perform traditional partner dances that trace back to Spain and have endured in the San Luis Valley, according to the park. The listed program includes the Broom Dance and La Marcha de los Novios. Cleo’s field note: a broom has spent centuries preparing floors for company; this one gets invited into the dance itself.
Mariachi San Luis is scheduled to bring the distinctive instrumentation, harmonies, and vocals of mariachi to the amphitheater. Los Semillas de la Tierra will present dances in full costume representing regions across Mexico. The group was founded by Patsy and Herman Martinez in 1972 and is now led by Domingo Estrada, the National Park Service says.
