Rita Raccoon has reviewed plenty of unusual race-day equipment. For Manhattan Beach’s Pumpkin Race, her notebook has one key question: how much wheel can a pumpkin reasonably supervise?
The 36th Annual World Famous Pumpkin Race returns Sunday, October 18, bringing handcrafted pumpkin racers down Manhattan Beach Boulevard toward the pier. The free family festival starts at noon, with the races scheduled for 2 p.m. sharp, according to Experience Manhattan Beach’s event listing. The Downtown Manhattan Beach event page also lists the 36th annual race for October 18.
It is a coastal-town contest with a wonderfully clear premise: build a racer around a pumpkin, line it up, and send it toward the finish. The official listing calls the event Pumpkin Race Land and describes costumes, creative racers, and Halloween fun for all ages. Rita’s consumer desk approves of any competition where the main investment is ingenuity and the star has already arrived in its own orange shell.

The schedule gives racers a tidy mission: reach Manhattan Beach Boulevard, be ready for the 2 p.m. start, and let the pumpkin do the traveling. A conventional race car arrives with a pit crew. Here, the pit crew may be carrying seasonal decorations and a strong opinion about wheel alignment.
For Rita, the appeal is the blend of neighborhood craft and serious finish-line focus. A pumpkin can spend the month on a porch, become pie, or briefly pursue a championship career by the Pacific. On October 18, Manhattan Beach has made room for option three.
Festival activities begin at noon near the Manhattan Beach Pier, and the pumpkin races start at 2 p.m. The event listing describes the festival as free and family-friendly. Rita’s final note for the field: bring your best design, trust your wheels, and give the gourd a moment in the spotlight.
